About C.I. Josephson Jewelry Store – Illinois, USA
In 1881, Carl G. Josephson, a Swedish immigrant, opened his first jewelry store in the Deere Block on 17th Street and Main, (todays River Drive). Carl died in 1891 and son Clifford Ivar Josephson took over the business which prospered and moved to 1518 – Main in 1897.
In 1912 Mr. Josephson formed a partnership with other business men and constructed the four-story Reliance building on Fifth Avenue between 15th & 16th Street and moved his Josephson’s Jewelry Store into a portion of the building’s street level shopping area. To draw attention to his new location, Josephson purchased a Seth Thomas two-dial eighteen foot tall post clock which he erected on the sidewalk outside his shop.
